This guide is offered as a practical reminder for sincere chanting. It does not replace guidance from Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books, guru, sādhus, and local ISKCON authorities.
The ten offenses
- Criticizing devoteesGuard speech and the inner habit of finding faults. If a correction is needed, seek the right time, mood and authority.
- Separating the Lord’s names from HimThe Holy Name is not material sound. Approach the names of Viṣṇu and Kṛṣṇa as non-different from the Supreme Lord.
- Neglecting guru and ācāryasChanting deepens when we receive the Name through authorized guidance and try to follow it.
- Criticizing śāstraDo not reduce revealed scripture to ordinary opinion or use it casually for argument.
- Considering the glories exaggeratedReceive nāma-mahātmya with faith, even while honestly acknowledging one’s present realization may be small.
- Imaginary interpretationAvoid turning the Holy Name into a symbol for material ideas or personal speculation.
- Sinning on the strength of chantingDo not use chanting as permission to continue actions known to be harmful or sinful.
- Equating chanting with ordinary pietyThe Holy Name is beyond karmic rituals and ordinary vows; chant as service to the Lord.
- Speaking confidential glory to the hostileShare according to receptivity, with compassion and discretion.
- Keeping “I” and “mine” after hearingReturn again and again to the mood of service instead of possession and pride.
How to avoid them in daily japa
- Begin with a short prayer for humility and attentive hearing.
- Keep distance from fault-finding conversations, especially before and after japa.
- When the mind wanders, return gently to hearing one Holy Name at a time.
- Study śāstra from authorized sources and ask senior Vaiṣṇavas when unsure.
If you notice an offense
- Do not despair or justify it.
- Ask forgiveness from the Holy Name and, where appropriate, from the devotee offended.
- Do one concrete act of service or appreciation toward Vaiṣṇavas.
- Continue chanting with more care, avoiding self-condemnation and pride.
Attentiveness: Inattention during japa is also regarded as a serious obstacle to pure chanting. Correction can begin gently: hear one name at a time and prayerfully return when the mind wanders.
