JAPA TIME — Lord Caitanya embraces and blesses Haridāsa Ṭhākura

Pramāṇa (Śāstra reference)

In Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya 11.185–195, Mahāprabhu comes to meet Haridāsa Ṭhākura, who is lovingly chanting the Holy Name. Seeing the Lord, Haridāsa offers full obeisances. Mahāprabhu raises and embraces him, and both weep in spiritual love. When Haridāsa humbly asks the Lord not to touch him, the Lord replies that He wishes to be purified by touching him and glorifies his constant chanting. The Lord then gives Haridāsa a secluded residence in the flower garden, promises to visit daily and arranges his prasādam.

Saṅkṣepa (short meaning)

In Jagannātha Purī, Mahāprabhu personally comes to Haridāsa Ṭhākura, who is absorbed in nāma-saṅkīrtana. Haridāsa falls before the Lord, but Mahāprabhu raises and embraces him. Humble Haridāsa considers himself unfit to be touched, yet the Lord glorifies the purity of a devotee who constantly chants the Holy Name. Mercy is expressed not only in words: Mahāprabhu arranges a secluded residence, promises daily meetings and cares for Haridāsa’s prasādam.

The Holy Name transcends external distinctions

The Lord glorifies one whose tongue constantly bears His Name beyond material designations of birth and position (11.190–192).

Mahāprabhu does not accept Haridāsa’s outward self-abasement as his true spiritual position and openly proclaims His devotee’s purity (11.189).

Humility attracts mercy

Haridāsa demands no recognition; his sincere humility becomes the meeting place for the Lord’s limitless mercy (11.188–189).

Mercy is expressed through care

The Lord gives more than an abstract blessing: He arranges a place for bhajana, daily association and prasādam (11.193–195).

Sevā today (practice for this day)

1. Chant and hear

During today’s japa, pronounce each Holy Name clearly and hear it attentively, following the example of Haridāsa Ṭhākura.

2. Honor a devotee

Name one genuine quality of a Vaiṣṇava and express respect without judging that person by birth or external position.

3. Read the exact verses

Read Cc. Madhya 11.185–195 in sequence and open the highlighted 11.186 account of the Lord’s embrace.
